Millie is a magazine and digital content program all about women and money—how to make it, save it, invest it, spend it, give it and talk about it.

Millie is dedicated to helping women achieve their financial goals and believes that pursuing those goals starts by having more intentional and transparent conversations about money. To do this, Millie pledges to tell stories about real women and create a judgment-free community that is inclusive across generations, identities, and preferences.

Design

Millie was a content marketing publication for Synchrony Bank. We launched the magazine and were given the opportunity to craft custom content and experiment, adapt and play around with how modern, bright, and fun the layout design could be.

We all worked together to pitch ideas for content, one of our goals was to be a platform for diverse perspectives. I often pitched ideas for things that mattered to me like: a recipe story featuring indigenous chefs to decolonize Thanksgiving or a spotlight on queer healthcare services.

Art Direction

As art director for Millie Magazine, I prioritized collaborating with artists and illustrators who were women, queer, trans or gender non-conforming and lesser known up and coming illustrators. We also liked to approach our topics in conceptual or abstract ways, pushing our illustrators to think outside of the box.

Ask Millie

To personify our brand voice we created a visual representation of Millie in the same way that Esquire has Esky or the New Yorker has Eustace Tilley. She was our relatable best friend next door and resident expert on all things personal finance. In every issue we had a recurring column where Millie answered questions relating to multiple topics.

Drawing Interest

This was one of my favorite sections, our back of book page that ended each issue with some humor. We wanted it to feel relatable to remind everyone that we’re all in the same boat. We tapped a different comic illustrator every issue to draw a graphic narrative with their take on anything related to money, finance, professional relationships or career aspirations.

Video

On the web we had several video franchises that were based off content from the magazine, like animated versions of Drawing Interest, money saving hacks, decoded financial terminology and more.
